HOSPITAL PLAYLIST SEASON 1 (슬기로운 의사생활 S1): A LOOK BACK ON E05 "MAFIA GAME"

 

I want to play an "intellectual" on this write-up by giving you my MAFIA GAME ANALYSIS 

I don't claim that this analysis is right, but I guess it makes sense. 

In this write- up I will be doing it in points for easy writing and reading.

POINT NO.1: The players represent the 4 boys of lacking 5. 

Jung Rosa as Ahn Jeong Won

Jo Young Hye as Yang Seok Hyeong 

Ju Jeon as Kim Jun Wan 

Ju Jong Su as Lee I Jun 

POINT NO.2: Yoo Yeon Seok as the duo (PD Shin and Writer Lee) 

The duo is the one choosing the man for Song Hwa, and thus it makes sense that he is the moderator of the game / MAFIA assigner

POINT NO.3: On the two rounds of Mafia Game 

On the first round of Mafia Game, Ahn Jeong Won chose Jung Rosa (and going back to POINT 1) Jung Ro Sa can represent Ahn Jeong Won.

But remember 1st round was a FAIL. 

Now let's get to round 2. 

The second round was SUCCESSFUL. 

In that round, the 3 players ( Ju Jeon, Jong Su, and Young Hye) voted Jung Ro-Sa, but it turns out that Jong Su is the MAFIA. 

So the civilians lose.

Now, I want to deep-dive by relating it to the flow of the whole season (since I am writing this one, after watching season 1) and how it can be connected to season 2. 

If you watched the reply series you know that in Reply 1994, Chilbong didn't get the lead girl (Na - Jung) and, by default since the actor [who played Jeong won and Chilbong] is the same, we will think that Hospital Playlist will be a redemption arc for Chilbong. 

Well yeah! HP can be sort of a redemption arc for Chilbong but, it will be too obvious if the duo will link Song Hwa to Jeong - Won. 

Instead of linking to Song Hwa and, be involved in a messy love triangle. The duo gave him Jang Gyeo-ul, a girl who will fell in love with him. 

Personally, that's striking and refreshing and a breath of fresh air. Because at least, he will not suffer on a messy love triangle unlike, Chilbong.

The duo wanted to write a different story for Jeong Won which will spare him from a love triangle. 

That is why 1st Round failed because Jung Rosa who is playing as Jeong - Won  was chosen on the first round buT then wasn't able to play game properly = Jeong Won not linked to Song Hwa

Moving on, l want to talk a little (or more) about reply references and relating them, to the second round. 

The game - MAFIA is about hiding and making sure that no one knows that you are the mafia. 

During the game you will see that there are two strategies, you could use to hide your identity

#1 Not telling you are a Mafia. 

This one is very obvious and everybody will be using it! 

#2 Telling that you are a Mafia

This one is kinda tricky and, it requires timing and good delivery to be effective.

Now, let's go to the statement of Jong Su 

Jong Su was smart to maximize that I AM THE MAFIA and use that to his advantage, and also make players confuse. 

With that in mind, and hopefully, my hunch is right the duo is using the second strategy.

The duo is already telling us that the man for Song Hwa (Mafia) is Ikjun through Jong Su saying that he is the mafia

But since they added reply clues plus the fact that the duo doesn't give directly the end game we still have doubts and think that Ik-jun is not the end game = No one in the mafia would openly say that they are in the Mafia

 Reply references I think is deliberately added to deceive us that it is not Ik-jun and to make us think that all Ik-song encounters (since in reply end game are not shown and usually revealed at the end) are just for a show, and in the end it will be another man from the lacking 5.

Like what Jong Su did, he made them think that it is not him because he is making it obvious. When in fact he is saying it directly and he is saying the truth, THAT HE IS THE MAFIA 

Just like Ik-Song encounters when they ate SUJEBI, NURUGJI, when Songhwa took care of UJU and many more. IKJUN is already telling us that HE IS THE ONE FOR SONGHWA

Before I end this, I would like to give a side note 

I believe the 4 ships (IKSONG, BIDULGI, GOM GOM, WINTERGARDEN) was created because the duo wanted to show us, 4 types of love [I will try to create a write up , about the different types of love each ships radiates] and how each one of them supports one another's love life. 

A refreshing scenario to see because in reply series, we always see  messy love triangles within the circle of friends. 

also, in the recent interview of PD Shin, he said

“For season 2, my key task was to use ‘Hospital Playlist’ season 1 as reference to prevent it straying from the base. We are making it with the desire to make the story deeper rather than newer overall, so please look forward to it.”

So, I trust those words and expect 

#1 Deeper connection between the lacking 5

#2 A conflict on each ship that will make them stronger.. NOT TO WRECK THEM
